COMPANY HISTORY

Over 150 years of history and tradition

Schelkovo Agrohim is among the few Russian enterprises that can trace their history back over a century and a half. It all began in 1876, when Ludwig Rabenek, a prominent manufacturer and head of the Manufactures' Association, founded a small plant to produce basic chemicals for local textile mills. This production facility in the city of Schelkovo, Moscow Region, became the core of the future town-forming, diversified chemical plant Schelkovo Enterprise Agrohim, producing products for various industrial sectors and agriculture.

A new qualitative leap occurred in 1963, when the Schelkovo Branch of VNIIKhSZR was established at the plant. The institute quickly gained a reputation as one of the leading industry research centers for creating effective and safe crop protection products, possessing strong scientific potential and its own pilot plant for refining innovative pesticide production technologies.

In 1998, Schelkovo Agrohim was established on the basis of the Schelkovo Enterprise Agrohim chemical plant and the branch of the VNIIKhSZR institute. Several key pesticide production shops and warehouses were transferred to the company, but its greatest asset was its workforce—scientists, engineers, and process technicians with rich practical experience who preserved the traditions and knowledge of previous generations. It was precisely this powerful intellectual resource and people with rich practical experience that enabled the new enterprise to rapidly gain momentum.

Starting with a volume of just 1,000 liters and a few product lines, today Schelkovo Agrohim is the undisputed leader in the Russian chemical crop protection market.

Such a long journey, connecting pre-revolutionary entrepreneurship, Soviet science, and modern business, makes the company a unique phenomenon in domestic industry.

In terms of scientific potential, Schelkovo Agrohim is the leader among Russian manufacturers.

Today, the company's R&D center is comparable to the largest research institutes in Russia. Led by an Academician of the RAS, it employs over 170 research scientists: a Corresponding Member of the RAS, Doctors of Sciences, and Candidates of Chemical, Biological, and Technical Sciences.

The company's scientific specialists have developed and commercialized unique formulation types, original product formulations, synthesis processes, and technologies for producing active substances. Many developments have no analogs and are protected by patents in the Russian Federation and abroad.

As is well known, selecting an effective combination of active ingredients is not enough to solve a given task. The defining factor of a product's efficacy is its formulation. Therefore, priority in product development is given to innovative formulation types: microemulsion (ME), colloidal solution concentrate (CSC), oil dispersion (OD), and oil emulsion concentrate (OEC). These unique, internationally recognized developments of Schelkovo Agrohim require deep professional knowledge, state-of-the-art equipment, and significant financial investments, all of which the company provides.

In the R&D center's chemical research division, technologies are developed for producing active substances, pheromones, active pharmaceutical ingredients, and fine organic synthesis products; technologies for new formulation types are created; effective combinations of active substances and their formulations are developed; and chemical and analytical testing is conducted.

In the laboratories of the Biological Research Department, specialists conduct agrochemical testing of products, develop biotechnological products, and perform phytosanitary analysis of samples using microbiology, PCR, and ELISA methods.

In 2025, a specialized laboratory complex equipped with climate chambers and a 5th-generation greenhouse was opened. Its equipment allows for testing plant protection and plant nutrition products in a controlled artificial climate, simulating both standard field and extreme conditions. Speed breeding (accelerated cultivation) technology makes it possible to rapidly test various product formulations and recipes on plants, selecting the most promising ones. Rapid screening of new products and preparation for seasonal field trials significantly shorten the path from development to commercial production. Such a complex—an example of cutting-edge biotechnological equipment currently available to only a handful of research centers in Russia—enables the company to reach a fundamentally new level of research and development.

The production of crop protection products is the company's core business. The product range includes over 190 items that provide comprehensive protection and nutrition for agricultural crops.

These are modern, highly effective products from the following groups: herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, seed treatments, fumigants, rodenticides, desiccants, pheromones, microbiological products, amino acid biostimulants, fertilizers for foliar feeding, plant growth regulators, and others.

The products are manufactured in various packaging options both for large-scale agricultural operations and for private farms and personal subsidiary plots. The plant's capacity makes it possible to produce virtually all formulation types known in international practice, including innovative ones: microemulsions, colloidal solution concentrates, oil emulsion concentrates, and oil dispersions.

The total annual capacity of the production facilities is 110,000 tons of products in a single-shift operation.

The main production facility is located in the city of Schelkovo, Moscow Region, and occupies an area of over 40 thousand sq m. This is an ultra-modern enterprise equipped with state-of-the-art technology and constantly updated equipment. Production is deployed in four independent automated shops equipped with robotic systems, production reactor units, multifunctional units, and process automation systems. A total of 39 process lines with a capacity of 500 thousand liters per day have been installed.

A separate shop is equipped for producing the company's own polymer packaging, featuring lines for manufacturing polyethylene canisters, including multilayer COEX containers with a protective barrier layer for aggressive pesticides. The total capacity of the units is 9 million pieces per year.

The enterprise has four warehouse complexes for finished products (total area of over 12 thousand sq m) equipped with multi-tiered racks and modern equipment from leading European manufacturers, as well as separate warehouses for raw materials. Finished products are shipped to all regions through an extensive network of regional warehouses and representative offices.

The quality of Schelkovo Agrohim products is ensured by a management system certified according to the international standard ISO 9001:2015. Multi-stage analytical control at all stages—from development to industrial production and final product acceptance—eliminates any defects and guarantees the release of high-quality products.

Each product unit receives individual serial marking according to the GS1 standard (the international Automatic Identification Association). The modern DataMatrix code system not only protects products against counterfeiting, but also contains extended product information and allows data to be read even from a damaged label.

The company's products undergo state registration and obtain approval for use in Russia, CIS countries, and non-CIS countries. This is preceded by years of comprehensive research and testing, including evaluation of biological efficacy, environmental safety, and toxicological and hygienic characteristics.

PLANT BREEDING AND SEED PRODUCTION

Schelkovo Agrohim's breeding and seed production activities are aimed at forming a complete production cycle for obtaining seeds of major agricultural crops on an industrial scale.

In the course of implementing the project, Schelkovo Agrohim has opened breeding and seed production centers, formed mass seed multiplication centers, and built and commissioned seed plants for industrial preparation of seeds for sowing.

In 2023, all projects in the field of breeding and seed production were united under one main breeding and seed production center, Betagran Seeds.

Betagran Seeds is an entire scientific and production complex engaged in three main areas: breeding, seed production, and industrial seed preparation for major agricultural crops.

The breeding division creates and commercializes new varieties and hybrids of major crops: winter and spring wheat, soybeans, peas, sugar beet, and sunflower.

As part of this direction, the company breeds highly productive varieties and hybrids that set records. For instance, the winter wheat varieties Yermolovka with a yield of 140.2 dt/ha and Zyuganovka with a yield of 184.95 dt/ha, as well as the Tairy soybean variety with a yield of 47.96 dt/ha, were entered into the Book of Records of Russia. Sunflower hybrids Krechet, Freya, and Karina were recognized at the Breeding Breakthrough industry award.

By 2027, Schelkovo Agrohim's breeding portfolio includes 7 varieties of winter wheat and 3 varieties of soybeans, 43 sugar beet hybrids, and 14 sunflower hybrids listed in the State Register of the Russian Federation. Five new highly productive winter wheat varieties, 3 soybean varieties, 1 pea variety, as well as 2 hybrids each of sugar beet and sunflower have been submitted for state variety testing. A large-scale project for spring wheat breeding using biotechnology and speed breeding has been launched.

The centers of breeding work are:

Betagran Seeds — a breeding and seed production center in the Oryol Region for creating new highly productive varieties of winter wheat and soybeans;
SoyuzSemSvekla — a breeding and genetics center in the Voronezh Region for creating competitive, highly adaptable next-generation sugar beet hybrids;
Aktiv Agro — a breeding and seed production center in the Krasnodar Krai for creating sunflower hybrids.

The seed production division covers the full cycle—from primary seed production to elite and reproductive seed production for industrial multiplication. Mass seed multiplication centers with a total area of more than 60 thousand hectares are located in various regions of our country. Seed production work is carried out in the company's own centers—NPO Betagran Seeds, Kursar, Dubovitskoye in the Oryol Region, Pyshlitskoye Agro in the Moscow Region, Molvino Agro in the Ulyanovsk Region, Helianta in the Krasnodar Krai, and others—as well as in the fields of leading breeding and seed production centers.

All seeds undergo a full technological cycle of preparation for sowing at the company's seed plants:

Betagran Seeds — a modern complex using non-damaging technology for preparing seeds of winter wheat, soybeans, and other crops in the Oryol Region;
Betagran Ramon — production of pelleted seeds of sugar beet, sunflower, and other crops in the Voronezh Region;
Dubovitskoye — a modern grain complex for the production of seeds of winter and spring wheat, soybeans, buckwheat, peas, and beans in the Oryol Region;
Kursar — production of seeds of wheat, soybeans, peas, and rapeseed in the Oryol Region;
Helianta — a modern plant for processing sunflower seeds in the Krasnodar Krai.
Construction of a seed plant has been launched at Molvino Agro in the Ulyanovsk Region.

One of the tasks of the breeding and seed production project is the development and improvement of regionally oriented crop cultivation technologies and the formation of technological passports that allow for a fuller realization of the potential of varieties and hybrids.

As a result of its breeding and seed production activities, Schelkovo Agrohim offers agricultural producers high-quality seeds of highly productive Russian-bred varieties and hybrids of winter and spring wheat, soybeans, peas, buckwheat, sugar beet, sunflower, and corn.

The main task of the Schelkovo Agrohim Agricultural Technology Center is the development of technologies that make it possible to fully reveal the potential of crops, increase yields, and obtain high-quality products under agricultural production conditions in each specific region.

Over the years of the Center's operation, technologies adapted to the soil and climatic conditions of different regions of the country have been refined. This makes it possible to offer farmers a comprehensive solution to bring their farms to a highly profitable level.

One of the central sites for refining cultivation technologies of major agricultural crops is the company's own farm Dubovitskoye LLC in the Oryol Region, where international conferences with invited agricultural experts have been held for many years and impressive results in achieving high yields are demonstrated.

An important part of the Agricultural Technology Center's work is agricultural support. Highly qualified specialists of the company conduct technological targeted agricultural support for crop cultivation and provide consultations on product application. More than 300 highly qualified specialists work in the agricultural service, providing agricultural support over an area of more than 5.3 million hectares. The company knows: improper use of crop protection products can spoil the reputation of even the best products. Therefore, an agricultural support service is available in all regions and for all farms.

To monitor the field situation and make prompt plant protection decisions, specialists of the Agricultural Technology Center actively use modern digital technologies. With the implementation of digital services, it has become possible to conduct detailed analysis of crop development, monitor treatments, and forecast situations, while significantly saving agronomists time on crop scouting.

The company is actively developing treatment technologies using unmanned aerial systems (UAS). The use of drones allows working effectively in hard-to-reach areas, avoiding soil compaction, and saving products through spot application. Schelkovo Agrohim has already accumulated successful experience using UAS on various crops, and the list of products adapted for such treatment is constantly expanding. This gives farmers additional tools to increase efficiency in challenging field conditions.
